Looking at the increasing importance of bio-diversity conservation across the globe and due to presence of a rich biodiversity in the Jewel of the crown of Himalayas the GHNP, which has been accredited with the status of the prestigious, UNESCOs World Heritage Site, an official web site of the prestigious Great Himalayan National Park situated at Shamshi has been officially launched by Sh Thakur Sigh Bharmouri, the Hon’ble Forest minister of Himachal Pradesh in the conference hall of Forest Head quarters at Talland in Shimla, amongst a big gathering of officials of Forest and Wildlife wing of the Forest Department.  The function was also graced by the newly inducted Minister from Kullu, Sh Karan Singh, Minister for Cooperation and Ayurveda, where the park is situated. Both the incumbent PCCFs of the Department, JS Walia and SS Negi were present on the occasion. Sh TS Bharmouri has addressed the gathering of the officers and has appreciated the efforts of the Forest and wildlife officials, in conserving the bio-diversity of the Park and obtaining the World Heritage Status and in its unique contribution to the society.

The Forest Minister, also appealed to the officials of the park, to enhance the eco tourism and provide adequate facilities to the nature lovers visiting the park. He also advised to strengthen the Bio-Diversity conservation Society operating in the Park and also to strengthen the personnel deployed in the staff by involving the local communities in the management of the park. Bharmouri has also, appreciated that the launching of the Website will facilitate the foreign tourists as well as the domestic, and will accrue a lot of revenue to the Park. The website will be improved to the extent that all bookings and reservations regarding visit to the park will be facilitated through this website soon. The GHNP was established in 1984, and is spread over 754.4 sq km, and comprises of 2 wild life sanctuaries namely Sainj and Tirthan, along with 265.6 Sq Km of eco zone, which was later upgraded as a National Park, and has succeeded in achieving the status of World Heritage Site during 2014, at the World Heritage Site committee convention held at Doha in state of Qatar on 23rd June 2014. The park boasts of housing the rarest of the rare wild fauna of Western Himalayas, namely Snow leopard, Musk deer, Serow, Himalayan Brown bear, Western Horned Tragopan and Koklas.

Launch of the Offical Website

Speaking on the occasion Sh Karan Singh, also pleaded with the Park authorities to improve the connectivity inside the park. The Park Director, BS Rana, speaking on the occasion has stated that the need for an official website has been created due to multiplicity of presence of a number of similar websites, floated by individuals and commercial tourist operators and causing lot of confusion in the minds of the visitors to the park, and he stated that simultaneously action is likely to be initiated against the websites, which are using the insignia of the GHNP and other official information, which is exclusive property of the Government. This newly launched web site of GHNP will now be linked with all the Government web sites, including the Forest and Tourism. Â While thanking, Sh Bharmouri for gracing the occasion, A R M Reddy, CCF (WL) has also thanked all the officials, and the research organisations like scientists of FRI and other states, who have contributed a lot, to the construction of this web site of the park in a short time.
